"The Voice of the Universe" series is a "classic" space opera with mysterious aliens, space ships, numerous colonized planets (there are currently 95 planets in the "Human Unity") and a protagonist with a special ability:
Book One:
Star ship captain Jaiah Sufford can hear everything, literally. He was born with a heightened sense of hearing that turns the slightest whisper into a roar.
Searching for the quietest spot in the known universe, he finds a mysterious crystal ball that only he can hear singing. To his horror, he discovers that the crystal comes from the Heelith, an alien species humans have fought for centuries.
Suddenly, he has to make contact with the dreaded alien enemy, while escaping from anti-Heelith terrorists who want to kill him for trying to talk to the aliens.
Book Two:
Within days of Jaiah Sufford’s arrival at the Heelith Homeworld, anti-human forces try to kill him.
After Jaiah bonded with a Heelith crystal, thanks to his extraordinary hearing, he accepted an invitation to visit the Heelith capital, Gaalan.
Jaiah soon feels like he poked into a hornet’s nest, confronted with a sub-species of Heelith who can manipulate others with the power of their voices. He also encounters a group of human prisoners-of-war that no one in the Human Unity knows about.
As he discovers new abilities of his crystal every day, Jaiah tries to safely navigate the Heelith jungle of deadly intrigues. What is his crystal trying to tell him? And how does he stay alive?
Book Three: out now!
Jaiah Sufford did not ask for the turmoil that comes with being bonded to a Heelith crystal. In fact, he’s not even sure what being bonded means, or why the crystal chose him, or what it means to now be a “manipulator”. Usually these things happened to Heelith, not to humans. Then his crystal grants something no Heelith had ever been granted before: a way to find the Star of Sound.
Despite naysayers and ill-wishers, Jaiah and his friends both Human and Heelith ride on President Saros’s flagship to see if his visions are true. They find the Star of Sound, and a group of large crystals orbiting one of the star’s planets.
The Heelith are ecstatic about the find. Legend says beings of enormous wisdom, beauty, and power once lived here. Scans reveal one artificial structure on the planet, but there are no signs of life. A landing party visits the structure, eager to learn more, but they stir something that Jaiah soon wishes had not been awakened.
